Virginia State University Hosts
Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Celebration
The public is invited to a celebration of the Martin Luther King. Jr.
Holiday hosted by West Virginia State University. The evening of entertainment
and remembrances will take place at 6 p.m. on Monday, January 17, 2005
in the theater of the Davis Fine Arts Building on the WVSU campus. A reception
with light refreshments will follow.
Among those performing musical selections will be Ms. Doris Fields singing
“Precious Lord” in the style of gospel great Mahalia Jackson
who sang at Dr. King’s funeral; the Martin Luther King Choir, and
the WVSU Gospel Choir.
Remembrances will be given by local actors portraying thoughts of those
who were Dr. King’s contemporaries or those upon whom his life and
teaching had a great impact.
Dr. Stuart McGehee, WVSU professor and chair of history, will serve as
emcee for the event.
Remembrances of: Ralph David Abernathy, Shirley Chisolm,
Barbara Jordan, Robert Kennedy, Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King,
Jr., Rosa Parks, Adam Clayton Powell, Eleanor Roosevelt, Cornell West,
Malcom X and others.
Featuring: Sharon Banks, Arnie Cooper, Mark Fuller,
Crystal Good, Veela Grooms, Bill Hairston, Ivin Lee, Stuart McGehee, Sally
Marcus, Tom Rodd, Patty Roseborough, Will Taylor, David Wohl, Jeff Woods
and friends of WVSU.
Performances by: The Martin Luther King,Jr., Men’s
Choir; Charleston Area Performance Academy Speech Choir; Doris Fields;
and other talent.
